Where did the idea to run as Spiderman come from?
“I had thought about it in the past – I’ve always wanted to try it out really. I had a place in the race anyway and originally I was looking to pace a friend under 2hrs 28mins. But then the Spiderman thing popped up and I thought ‘why not?!'”
Did you have the world record in mind before the race?
“Definitely! I had a little Google of the fancy dress records beforehand and knew I could beat it.”
You did some mid-race video commentary, while 6min/miling – was that pace a breeze for you?!
“That video was early on in the race – around the second mile I think. I saw Paula’s group behind and couldn’t miss the chance to run alongside her! The pace actually picked up after that and I ended up running around 5.20min/miling.”
Was the suit a noticeable hindrance on your running?
“Not really, no. It wasn’t super tight, so breathability was fine. The worst thing about it was the face mask, which was pretty claustrophobic. I said to my running partner after about 10 miles, ‘I need to take this thing off!’ But I managed to keep going.”
Will you be racing in fancy dress again in the near future?
“If someone breaks my record, then yes! Otherwise, I think I’ll stick to the usual.”
What’s the next race on your agenda?
“I’m running the Wings for Life World Run. I’m not too sure what distance I can get, as I feel pretty rough at the moment and it’s off the back of a couple of marathons, but I’ll aim for anything between 60 and 70K.”
