US athlete Evan Jager was only moments away from winning gold in the 3,000m event at the Diamond League meeting in Paris when he heart-wrenchingly fell at the last hurdle, literally.

Jager had been leading Kenyan Jairus Birech by a good couple of seconds and upon clearing the last hurdle, his legs buckled and caused him to fall to ground. The American could only look on in agony as Birech raced past him and across the finish line.

Jager did however find some solace in smashing his own US record with a time of 8hrs 0mins 45secs, and will know that next time without a fall, he could go even better.
