A new app has been developed that can help runners with diabetes keep on top of their blood sugar levels – without having to carry cumbersome medical equipment.
But why is it important for diabetics to measure their blood sugar/insulin levels?
Dr Moshe Kamar, medical director at Dario, says: “If you have insulin dependent diabetes, self-testing your blood sugar (blood glucose) is very important in managing your treatment plan and preventing long-term complications of your condition. In general, the frequency of testing depends on the type of diabetes you have and your treatment plan. Especially a Type 1 runner – those new to the sport and seasoned athletes – should be sure to regularly monitor blood glucose levels in order to understand their body’s response to exercise and fuelling.
Most runners require 30-60 grams of carbohydrate every hour when running long distance, but in some situations, the runner with Type 1 should think twice and adjust carbohydrate and insulin intake, depending on blood glucose levels before starting out, length and intensity of the run, time of day, time of last meal, and previous reaction to similar bouts of exercise. Athletes with Type 2 diabetes can generally exercise safely providing the insulin level is not too low and the blood sugar is not too high.
When exercising for longer than 60 minutes, this extra carb can help maintain blood glucose levels and delay fatigue. When blood glucose levels remain too high for too long (hyperglycemia or high blood sugar), it can cause serious problems including heart disease, blindness, impotence and stroke. The opposite problem (hypoglycemia or low blood sugar) can be just as serious, leading to neurological impairment, seizures, unconsciousness, brain damage or even death.
Why Dario is good/practical to take with you when running a marathon:
To keep blood sugar in check, the pocket-sized Dario smart meter is perfect for running as it saves diabetics from carrying cumbersome kit. The Dario is a small device which you can keep in your drinks belt, and plug into your smartphone on the go to automatically log blood sugar levels on the Dario app, which gives actionable insights and calculates AIC levels. Dario’s integration with fitness app Runkeeper uses GPS to map your distance, calories and speed. Loved ones needn’t worry when you’re out training as they can track your key stats wherever you are at the touch of a button. The data gathered can be used for you, your trainer and your physician to profile your calories needs and insulin adjusted to different levels of exercise.
