MR’s Adam Ellis looks at the Great Wall of China Marathon

What?

26.2 miles of China’s popular tourist attraction has been an opportunity too good to miss since 1999. The ancient landmark stretches over 5,500 miles and can be spotted from the International Space Station – allegedly. From its inaugural marathon of 292 participants, interest has since climbed at a rate similar to China’s population growth with 2,000 runners taking part this year.

When?

Saturday 16th May 2015

What’s on offer?

Three feature races – aside from the full marathon and half, there is also the opportunity of a 5.5mile Fun-Run along the structure that was sanctioned to be built in 700BC: one for all the family then.

Multi-Terrain?

One for the off-roaders and hill runners, but not exclusively. The route alternates between stretches of the wall, to the asphalt and gravel tracks of surrounding villages. Expect a high number of ascents and descents given the 5,124 steps to negotiate.

Where?

Xiaying, far-east China. The bulk of the race circuit takes place here around 20km east of Beijing.

How much?

Registration for any race format is exclusive to event organisers’ Albatros Adventures and their selected partners (two listed in the UK).

Under the two itineraries available, participants can purchase a 6-day or 7-day extravaganza that mixes sport and culture. The following figures are based on staying in a 3-star hotel.

With the addition of return flight tickets and a £50 daily budget; the total cost is at least £1,900 for one adult. For two people, you’re looking closer towards £3,700.

*Albatros’ packages EXCLUDE flight tickets and Visa.

How tough is it?

With the race in May, temperatures average 30 degrees Celsius. The oriental tropics as expected also serve up high humidity around the middle part of the year.

What is the record?

A Salomon running trio completed the course in 3hrs 19mins 17secs in 2013.

What else should I know?

Every person who travels to China will need a visa. You will not set foot inside China without one of these.

It’s also recommended to be safe rather than sorry and not drink Chinese water.
