Men’s Running brings you five top tips to running to work…
Split it up
We’re not all fortunate enough to live within a mile or two of work. If your commute is more of a marathon than a sprint, don’t despair – you simply need to split things up. Instead of running from door to desk, consider running to and from the train station. Alternatively, could you get a train or tube for part of the journey and run the rest? Being creative with your daily commute is a key part of an enjoyable run to work.
Buy the right backpack
Running to work with your suitcase tucked under one arm will not make for a happy commute. Invest in a decent running backpack that straps around your waist and shoulders to prevent excess movement. Your backpack needs to light enough to not weigh you down but roomy enough to hold your essential items of clothing.
Take the scenic route
Sure, the most direct route to work might be along a busy A road. But that’s not going to be much fun to run alongside. Instead, do a little research and plot a route that takes in some parks, side streets or canal towpaths. You might not get to work quite as quickly but you’ll be in a much better mood when you do arrive.
Pack in advance
To avoid carrying in a neatly folder shirt everyday of the week, bring five days’ worth on Monday and leave them in your locker or by your desk. Sure, it involves a little forward planning but it saves you hassle in the long run.
The shower dilemma
You don’t want to get a reputation as the smelly bloke in the office. So, if your place of work doesn’t have a shower, it’s time to look for alternatives. Find a nearby pool or gym (some will let you get cut-price membership just to use the showering facilities). Alternatively, just buy baby wipes and leave them at your desk.
