In light of recent reports that Matthew McConaughey is set to lead in a movie adaption of Born To Run.  Here are a list of six running films you probably haven’t heard of.

Unbroken (2014)

Starting with the most likely for you to have heard, this is an Angelina Jolie directed film. This may have fallen under your radar, however, as the film was released on Christmas Eve.

Based on real life events from World War II, Olympian Louis Zamperini falls the victim of a plane crash after his bomber was hit. After surviving 47 days in a raft he is then caught by the Japanese navy and sent to prisoner-of-war camps.

The Robber (2010)

This film tells the true story of Johann Kastenberger, a marathon runner, bank robber and murderer all in one.

After winning several marathons and breaking records, whilst simultaneously robbing banks, Johann is eventually caught out.

His pursuit was the largest investigation in Austria’s post-war history, involving more than 450 officers.

On the Edge (1986)

Bruce Dern stars as Wes Holman, an aging professional runner who missed his one shot at glory.
However a second chance has been gifted, and in one final attempt to achieve victory, Holman does all he can.

The Jericho Mile (1979)

Larry Murphy was sentenced to prison for first-degree murder after shooting and killing his father. Larry only did so because his father raped his sister.

During his stint in prison Larry keeps to himself whilst using the only free time he has to pursue long distance running in the prison yard.

The warden realises how fast Larry is and brings the state track and field coach down, with a few distance runners.

Larry blows them away and the coach agrees to work with him, acknowledging that there is real Olympic potential.

Run for your life (2008)

First-generation Jewish immigrant, Fred Lebow, is hailed as being responsible for the New York Marathon.

The New York Road Runners Club was just a small group of men who scrambled around the streets of the Bronx.

Fred Lebow turned this into one of the largest organizations of its kind and spurred many a non-running man, into a runner.
