With 25,000 people descending on Southsea last weekend for the Great South Run, we thought we’d take a look at some other great 10-milers

The north coast of Wales boasts this 10-mile treasure. An extremely flat course with a rise of only 20 metres, this out-and-back race along the promenade offers you a great opportunity of beating your PB. The only setback may be the strong off-shore winds.

This 10-mile course gives you an array of terrain to cover while also complimenting the route with Salisbury’s quaint Englishness. Starting on a running track, the course heads out towards the River Avon and runners pass by the cathedral on the way back to the track for the finish. An exciting race that warrants being labelled as one of the country’s best.

Ditch the Easter eggs for a 10-mile run with the Folkestone 10 taking place on Good Friday. Useful in gauging your ability ahead of any summer half/full marathons you may have planned. Flat to a large extent, an ideal waypoint for people based in the south-east.

One that opens with a tricky 5 miles to negotiate through the Ardlamont Peninsula but compensates with an easier second half. Strategy is key on this remote route, which follows the aptly named ‘Secret Coast’ of Argyll. A pleasant retreat from civilisation.

Any excuse to be named ‘King of the Mountain’ ought to be grabbed with both hands. Total Warrior is no breeze, however, with the obstacle course designed by ex-military personnel ready to cause you pain. The course covers all of the Lake District’s natural landscape with several hills and rivers needing to be overcome. Don’t be surprised if your shoes aren’t salvageable afterwards, this is tough.

Held in the foothills of the Brecon Beacons, rural Wales once again provides an eye-catching 10-mile race for this list. Despite being located in a mountain range, the course is flat and well paced for a PB attempt. Be prepared for a hot August day and a sprint finish at the Brecons’ athletic track.
