Often regarded as running’s un-cool older brother, orienteering is about to get a makeover. The Red Bull Robin Hood event – taking place in Sherwood Forest, naturally – will bring a sense of excitement and fun to this age-old pursuit of running, walking and navigating.
Competitors will need to find their way around the carefully mapped out course in Sherwood Pines Forest, while completing a range of special tasks and activities and meeting some interesting characters along the way.
Orienteering is a test of speed, stamina and mental acumen, and is popular around mainland Europe. Mike Hamilton, Head of British orienteering, said: “Red Bull Robin Hood is a great new concept that is built on heritage and tradition, just like orienteering.
“This event is a fantastic way of giving more people the knowledge of the sport, using an approach that is new and exciting. We expect it to be a big hit and will encourage more people to give the sport a try.”
The event has been set up to raise money for the Wings For Life charity, which was set up by Red Bull in order to help find a cure for spinal cord injuries. This ties in with the values held dear by Robin Hood and his merry men who were famous for helping those less fortunate than others.
It’s only £5 to enter for men and women and all proceeds go to Wings For Life. There are two categories in the competition – a men’s category and a women’s category – with prizes for the podium finishers: £500 for 1st place, £300 for 2nd and £250 for 3rd place.
