1) Kenyans remain quite good at distance running
Hold the press! Stanley Biwott’s victory, in 2hrs 10mins 34secs, confirmed underground reports that, as a nation, Kenya continues to dominate the marathon. The last non-Kenyan to win the New York race was Gebregziabher Gebremariam in 2hrs 8mins 14secs back in 2010.
2) Keitany can’t be stopped
Mary Keitany became the first woman since Paul Radcliffe in 2008 to successfully defend her crown. The 33-year-old Kenyan won by over a minute, breaking away from runner up Aselefech Mergia and third-place finisher Tigist Tufa, both of Ethiopia, to cross the line in 2hrs 24mins 25secs.
3) That’s a LOT of people
(a distance of 18 miles!)
4) Running unites like no other sport
This year’s race saw runners from 139 countries and all 50 US states flock to Staten Island for the start of the most popular running event in the world.
5) You could be one of 50,000 runners next year
