The Morrisons Great Manchester Run have taken on their first ever poet in residence.
Tony Walsh’s poem, Do Something, is directly targeted at trying to encourage participants into this year’s 10K run, which takes place on Sunday, May 10.
Tony, who used to work for the Council before quitting his job to follow a life-long dream, said: “The Morrisons Great Manchester Run is quite an emotional thing for people, whether they’re doing it for charity or personal reasons and I wanted the poem to reflect that passion.
“There’s also a great sense of occasion with big crowds, banners, balloons and fancy dress outfits and I wanted to capture that spirit and colour of the day.”
Organisers are hoping Tony will recite his poem as runners cross the start line in Portland Street, Manchester, during their send-off. While athletes make their way round the course, Tony will record a poem ready for broadcast by the BBC at the finish.
Tony, aged 49, added: “I’ve watched the Run several times and am passionate about Manchester so know exactly what this event means to the city and those who take part.”
