A friendly, flat and traffic-free course in Hyde Park that is marked and run on easy roads. Plenty of marshals on hand to support you and all finishers receive a £5 off voucher from sponsors Sweatshop in Clapham. Each kilometre is marked with signposts and every finisher receives a T-shirt, piece of fruit and flapjack. There’s also a 10K on the same day.

Battlefield 5K Run

Fancy taking in some history while you run? This road race takes place in Northamptonshire, starting and finishing in Naseby, home of the famous Battle of Naseby where, in 1645 Oliver Cromwell defeated Charles I in the key battle of the English Civil War. There’s also a 10K on the same day and the 5K run is mostly tarmac road with 1K along a farm track.

Wild Mud Run 5K

Here’s a 5K with a difference. Taking place in the historic grounds of Osmaston Manor, Derbyshire, the event is in its second year. The race involves swampy terrain, undulating hills and wooded areas, as well as obstacles including water slides, monkey bars, cargo nets, balance beams, tightropes and even fire. Not for the faint hearted, certainly, but a lot of fun for the rest of us.

Heroes Run Brighton 5K

The Heroes Run 5K, held in aid of Brighton-based charity Pass It On Africa, is an occasion like no other. Entrants sign up for the event, and then decide to run as either a hero or a villain. On race day, participants then face off, ready for battle (or running, in this case). The course flows along the seafront and turns back at Hove Lagoon, before then finishing at the start point.

Ipswich Summer 5K Series

This series returns after a boom in entries in 2014 and offers an undulating two-lap course in Christchurch Park. Runners of all abilities welcome. The race is part of a series, but you can enter just one race or sign up for a three- or four-race season ticket. For those who don’t like early starts, this series will appeal to you – the race starts at 7.30pm.

Race For Life

Race for Life is a lively, fun and extremely popular event. The series of races are held up and down the country and all raise money for Cancer Research. The Manchester 5K race takes place in Prestwich’s Heaton Park, the largest municipal park in Europe. The course takes runners along footpaths, roads and grass. All in all, it’s a fantastic race for a great cause.
