“I’ve been a volunteer for just over a year now. It’s a family affair for us; there’s me, my husband and my two children, who take it in turns to run and volunteer.
“Volunteering, for me, is all about seeing the different reasons everyone has to show up in the park. Some are there for PBs, some are there to keep fit, some are there to socialise with friends. As a volunteer, you feel like you’re allowing them to take part and have those reasons to run.
“Mount Edgcumbe is unique from a course perspective because it’s genuinely quite tough (ranked the third hilliest in the UK), but also because it’s in a proper deer park. You’re not just running on tarmac, you’re running on rugged woodland trails. It’s also small in numbers, so it feels like a family.
“For anyone thinking of volunteering, I would say just do it! The buzz of being a runner is great, but I would say I have an even bigger smile on my face when I’m donning the high-viz. As a runner, you’re in your own little bubble, but as a martial you’re seeing everyone else’s progress and that’s pretty special.”
