What is it?
The UK’s first official vertical kilometre race. For those unfamiliar with the format, vertical kilometres are the short, sharp shock of mountain running.
Often taking place up ski runs in the summer season, they see runners ascend 1,000m in as quick a time as possible.
The Mamores Vertical KM climbs 1,000m in just 4.5K.
Why should I do it?
It’s a badge of honour among trail runners. No one pretends these things are enjoyable in the moment – they’re absolute agony, by all accounts – but no hill rep will ever feel as tough again.
Plus, the view from the top is absolutely spectacular.
How tough is it?
Don’t be fooled by the race’s relatively short distance; these things are a real brute.
Getting to the top will require both physical strength and mental fortitude, while the technical terrain will test your skills to the limit.
Pace yourself, dig deep and remember that pain is temporary, bragging rights are forever.
Where is it?
In the Lochaber area of the Grampian Mountains in the Scottish Highlands, with Ben Nevis to the north and Loch Leven to the south.
When is it?
Friday 16 September, 2016.
How do I enter?
Head over to skylinescotland.com and fill in the application form. This is a challenging and technical event, however, so mountain experience is absolutely vital. Be honest about your own ability before entering.
