We’ve all been there – in our typically dreamy state we press the snooze button the moment our alarm rings. This process is then repeated again, every ten minutes, for the next hour.

Emerging from bed sooner than our body is used to can come as a bit of a shock, but the more it is done the easier it gets. And as strange as it sounds, it actually starts to become routine.

This is great for us runners, because a morning jog can come with plenty of benefits: not only physical but also practical perks, potentially making for an easier day ahead.

For example, running as soon as you wake up can really help to free up your day. After you break through the mental barrier of emerging earlier than normal, the rest of the day can benefit.

No longer will you need to cram in meetings or re-work your meal times to fit in a workout during a busy afternoon. Heading out early removes a lot of the daytime hassle that can be caused.

A morning run will also help you escape the summer heat, which can stick around until the late evenings. This could really benefit your performance and maximise your results.

Not only will it be cooler, but it will also be less busy and less crowded on roads, paths and in gyms. This is ideal when trying to relieve stress – aiding focus and motivation.

Another plus to morning running is that, due to the lack of cars and public transport, pollution is at a lower level than it might be at during the day. That fresh morning air isn’t just fresh because it’s cooler – it is actually cleaner. This obviously makes for better conditions to get out in, so really is worth taking note of.

There are also some simple benefits to jogging before the day kicks in; you wont have to take an extra shower, you’ll be motivated to eat well and your thinking will probably be clearer during the day.

All of these benefits add up and make a real difference to those of us who work busy jobs, or who have little spare time. So give up one lie-in this week and see the results for yourself!
