Mind over matter

Mind or body – which weighs in heavier in the pursuit of sporting success? The issue has long been debated by psychology and physiology experts. Is it your mind’s determination that carries you to the finish or does your physical endurance play the deciding role?

A study by London’s CHHP (Centre for Health & Human Performance) has unveiled a formula that decodes each system’s contribution. Eighty per cent is attributed to the physiologists’ corner; the body’s ability to ship oxygenated red blood cells around the body in line with the muscular system’s demands wins the majority – leaving a lowly 20% of success accountable to the mind.

But the study’s Head Researcher, Professor Andy Lane of London’s CHHP , says the figures shouldn’t be taken necessarily at face value, claiming the mind’s 20% as the overall clincher – or the ‘magic fifth’.

“Twenty per cent of the formula is down to motivation, confidence and self-belief and these factors are nearly always the results of a solid support network. Family, friends and coaches are there from the beginning, cheering on the athlete from the touchline, helping them to bounce back after a loss and to manage the high level of pressure along the journey,” said Professor Lane.

Mind over matter“Having this support network helps build the player’s confidence and is key in terms of visualisation, goal setting and self-mantra.  Many athletes have the same skill and fitness levels but those at the top, who stay at the top, have the psychological advantage. This ‘magic fifth’ is the winning component as a positive mental attitude has a prolific affect on performance,” he adds.

The research was commissioned by Grant’s Whisky as part of its Stand Together campaign. Ali Cloudsdale at Grant’s Whisky says: “Behind every great success there’s a great circle of support which provides encouragement and motivation and helps instil the belief that you can succeed.”
