ESA astronaut Tim Peake has achieved a brand new Guinness World Record title for the fastest marathon in orbit, running the Digital Virgin Money London Marathon on-board the International Space Station in 3:35.21.
Marco Frigatti, Guiness World Record’s Head of Records, adjudicated the British astronaut’s attempt through a video link at the European Astronaut Centre of ESA in Cologne.
Frigatti said: “Tim has captured the hearts and minds of the nation since his mission on-board the International Space Station began last year. His latest achievement is surely his greatest – running the fastest marathon in space, on the only day-off from his gruelling schedule is fantastic accomplishment. Tim is a true inspiration and someone we can all look up to. Literally.”
Peake’s record is one of many Guinness World Record’s set at the London Marathon yesterday. Sixty-nine fun-runners set out in hopes of achieving titles from giant dinosaurs, two-man canoes and hot dogs, to film characters and four-man fire engines.
