WORDS: Tom Cleeland

As winter creeps down the garden path, motivation begins to wain. Your psyche can’t keep up with the ever-shortening evenings. We all impulsively pull the covers further over your head when the alarm rings at 6AM. But what if you could switch up your intentions for an altogether more wholesome experience? Would that solve your winter running blues?

Inspired by the pioneers at Good Gym (www.goodgym.org), who pair running with a good deed, let’s look at six fun ways to get fit for purpose this winter.

1. Running errands

While it might seem like a no brainer, when was the last time you ran to the supermarket? What about running to the shops on behalf of someone who couldn’t walk there, let alone jog? You might know an elderly neighbour or relative who needs some supplies. Make a (modest) list, grab an empty backpack and lace up. You’ll be back in time for a cup of tea and a biscuit, and some sage advice from your grateful new friend.

2. Money for your miles

We’re no strangers to a charity run. In many cases, it’s what got us running in the first place. But have you ever thought about taking it into your own hands? If clocking up the miles isn’t enough motivation, what if you donated a pound to a pot for every mile you run? Maybe for a week or a month? What about the 25 days leading up to Christmas? Donate the money to your chosen cause, grab a glass of mulled wine and relax.

3. Weekend fun run

As a runner, you no doubt have a few friends who promise they’ll come for a run with you, but never do. Well, there’s no time like the present. Turn a leisurely Sunday run into an event. Pick a location. A date. Set a time. Create a Facebook event. Maybe even design a T-shirt. (Don’t forget to invite your friends!) There, good deed done. And trust us, they’ll thank you for it.

4. Run with the dogs

A healthy hound loves a good run. No, I’m not talking about you. I’m talking about dogs. They are more enthusiastic about leaping around the park than most of us, yet often their owners aren’t capable of giving them the exercise they crave. Here’s the perfect opportunity for you to step in, grab the leash and dash out with your new best friend.

5.Cheer! Cheer!

Didn’t make it through the London Marathon ballot for a sixth year running? No problem. Volunteer instead. Charities need to stock their cheer points full of passionate supporters to cheer on the runners, so make sure you get your voice heard. If you really can’t resist a run, jog there and home again.

6. Run to work (and back!)

In winter, you are naturally more partial to taking the train or driving, rather than rock up to the office clad in Gortex and Lycra. Instead, challenge yourself to run to work every day for a month. There and back. Take the money you saved on your travel expenses and do a good deed. Maybe donate it to a local charity. Or you could take the family out for a slap up meal? Either way, you earned it.
