WEEKLY RUNDOWN

From Farah's triumph to Mekhissi-Benabbad strip tease, we bring you the hits and misses from the week in running

Hello and welcome to MR’s weekly rundown, your unofficial guide to all the comings and goings in the world of running. This week, we look at the conclusion of the European Championships in Zurich, Switzerland.

Good week

Mo Farah, 31, became the most successful non-relay athlete in the European Championships’ history after adding the 5,000m title to his 10,000m victory on Sunday.

Bad week

Frenchman Mahiedine Mekhissi-Benabbad stormed to the 3,000m steeplechase title in Zurich, only to be disqualified post-race for taking off his running vest and seemingly trying to eat it down the final straight.

Stat of the week:

19.98 seconds. The blistering time Great Britain’s Adam Gemili roared to gold in the Men’s 200m after matching his personal best despite treacherous conditions.

Rant of the week:

French team coach, Philippe Dupont, expressed his fury at Mekhissi-Benabbad being deprived of his 3,000m gold medal after the Spanish lodged an official protest against his clothing and footwear after his strip act.

He said: “I am very angry with the Spanish.

“It’s not sport. He was crying into my arms after running the 1500m heats this morning and yesterday he cried all night too.”

Dubious product award:
