Good week: Cardiff, who are due to host the 2016 Half Marathon World Championships, has proven its worth after a successful 13.1 mile race this week. Former 10,000m world record holder Dave Bedford said athletes would see “Cardiff at its best” in two years time.

Bad week: Haile Gabrselassie had to quit the defence of his Great Scottish Run after only 19 minutes. The legendary long distance runner from Ethiopia, who is now 41 years old, was having severe problems with his breathing. At the event last year he recorded a time of 61 minutes and 9 seconds – the fastest time ever recorded in Scotland for the 13.1-mile half-marathon distance.
