They’re in magazines, they’re on websites, they’re on advertising campaigns for supplement products, but do before and after pictures ever really reflect the truth?

There has always been an air of disingenuous credibility behind before and after photos – although avid readers of Men’s Running will know the lengths that our Fat to Fit readers go to in their shots.

“In just two months this overweight individual has now become a ripped hard nut with a better body than Brad Pitt.”

BBC Wales’s Week In Week Out’s investigation into sports supplements drafted in two volunteers for a ‘makeover’. You can see the before and after photo above, but just how long did it take them to look that way?

Under two hours according to the BBC.

A little light exercise, spray tan and posture guidance led them to being these remarkably new fit and healthy people.

Male volunteer Joe told the BBC: “We hardly did anything in between. There was hardly any editing of the photos, either. It just goes to show what complete rubbish some of these adverts must be.”

Under EU laws, before and after photos in relation to a product are strictly prohibited, however, consumers are finding clever ways around the rules.
